Club Status and History -
as of April 2006
I heard the club repeater for the first time around 1990 when I
was in high school. It sounded like the club was active. I
became interested in the club and its repeater when I came back to USF
for one term, Spring 2004. The club appeared dead at that time,
and it was very difficult to get information about its repeater,
website, message board, and so on. I am putting down all I
remember to help any students who want to bring the club back to
life.
This club would be a great way for people get involved in electronics,
communicate with radio clubs at other schools and in other cuntries,
and help students build their resumes. Student government could
be convinced to fund equipment for the club. The University of
Florida's Gator Amateur Radio Club has done this sucessfully and is active today. Student
governments are willing to provide $1,000 a term or more if you can
really show them how the organization is beneficial.
Repeater
The club repeater used to be on 147.240. At one point the
repeater required an 88.5Hz PL tone. As of 2004 the repeater
signal was very weak and it transmitted a dead carrier, but you could kurchunck it if you were right on
campus with decent power. It was rumored to have been at the ROTC
building at one point. A fun
project would be to do some DFing, find out where it is, and get
permission to fix it.
